A large shouler plane like this in Box is very wasteful because the grain must be quartersawn. In practice this means ripping out the centre portion of the log (rendering the offcuts either side useless) hoping there aren't any defects within. Sometimes hope counts for naught, as nearly an entire 27" x 5" log that had been drying for 20 years was scrapped trying to find a good enough matched set for this plane. Every time I chopped into the damned thing there was a knot/split/inclusionexactlywhere it couldn't stay. Naughty log!
