Lets begin the worlds shortest lesson on wedge dynamics. On a regular coffin smoother to remove the wedge or back off an iron (BLACK), the heel is struck. In order for this to work, the direction of force must change, from parallel with the sole, to parallel with the bed (WHITE). Naturally in this translation much force is lost, besides this would be impossible in a toted smoother. Enter the adjuster! By adding this stout striking iron, one can apply the force in the exact direction it is needed (RED). Thisis one of the wisest ideas I have ever come across in planemaking.
